NEGRO BANZO
NEGRO SONHO
Negro Banzo, Negro Sonho (work in progress) is an ongoing visual research project that investigates the intersection of memory, historical trauma, and emancipation. Through painting and autoethnography, the work analyzes Banzo, understood as a profound pain generated by the loss of freedom that marks the Black body. The research demonstrates that this condition updates itself and continues to traverse Black subjectivity in the present day.
In counterpoint, the project mobilizes the Dream and critical fabulation as political tools to engender new realities. The "negro sonho" works to restore the authorship of their own narratives to Black people, reclaiming space for mystery, delicacy, and the full right to invent new futures.

"The Black woman is taught to keep going, even when it hurts [...] because there is no space for the physical, emotional, or mental rupture of those who were never considered fully human." (KILOMBA, 2019).
In this context, where immediate survival is the only permitted grammar, the act of desiring requires a disproportionate effort, as it violently disrupts the expectation of mere servitude. Through the materiality of painting, the work articulates desire not as a passive impulse, but as a pathway to liberation. Owning this will becomes, therefore, a radical gesture of disobedience and emancipation.
